The weekend print is in, and while the superhero sequel “Clayface” took the top spot, the real alpha was found entirely further down the sheet. “You Can See Everything,” the new documentary chronicling the rise and spectacular implosion of Theranos, surged in its second weekend, posting the kind of per-screen averages that make studio executives weep. The street is treating this as a cultural fascination with a disgraced founder. I am treating it as a delayed Q3 earnings beat for one of the most misunderstood visionaries of our generation.
Let me be clear. We all know the Edison machines didn’t technically execute the medical diagnostics they were marketed to perform. But in this economy, who among us hasn’t exaggerated a product roadmap to secure a little runway? What the regulators, the journalists, and the hopelessly literal patients failed to realize is that Elizabeth Holmes was never actually building a B2B healthcare company. She was building a massive, decentralized, direct-to-consumer media juggernaut. And looking at the receipts, her execution was flawless.
In Silicon Valley, the pivot is sacred. Slack began as a glitchy multiplayer video game. Twitter began as an unusable podcast directory. Theranos merely began as a blood-testing startup before right-sizing its core competencies and executing a hard pivot into the blockbuster true-crime cinematic universe.
If you look at the customer acquisition cost for a standard theatrical release versus committing multi-billion-dollar wire fraud to organically generate a pre-installed fan base, Elizabeth’s model is actually insanely capital efficient.
When you adjust your framework, the entire Theranos saga reveals itself as a masterclass in lean-startup methodology. Hollywood spends hundreds of millions of dollars on CGI mud monsters just to get people into a theater. Holmes generated the exact same cultural footprint using only a black turtleneck, a manufactured baritone, and the reckless endangerment of a few thousand retail pharmacy customers. The synergies are undeniable.
I was having coffee with a prominent early-stage investor on Sand Hill Road yesterday morning. We both agreed that the only mistake Holmes made was her monetization strategy. She tried to monetize the blood, when the obvious play was to monetize the story of the blood. If she had simply pitched Theranos in 2014 as an “immersive, high-stakes theatrical experience with real-world regulatory consequences,” she would be ringing the bell at the NYSE right now instead of doing laundry in a federal penitentiary in Bryan, Texas.
Even the board of directors makes more sense through this lens. People mocked Holmes for putting Henry Kissinger and George Shultz on a healthcare board when neither of them knew the first thing about pathology. But as executive producers of a prestige corporate thriller? You literally cannot buy that kind of gravitas. They weren't duped investors; they were high-leverage casting choices.
Look at the long-term shareholder value she is still generating. Most founders flame out entirely after a down round. Holmes managed to secure a massive, involuntary restructuring from the Department of Justice, and she is still successfully driving box-office headwinds from behind bars. That is the kind of ruthless operational resilience they simply do not teach at Stanford.
The industry owes her an apology. The next time a 19-year-old founder pitches me a sleek black box that fundamentally violates the laws of thermodynamics, I am not calling the SEC. I am calling my agent.
