Warner Bros. credits Travis Scott's 'iPhone face' with driving $85M 'Odyssey' opening

└─ FIG. 01 Travis Scott hunches over his smartphone while gesturing at 'The Odyssey' box office charts on a screen in a Warner Bros. boardroom, flanked by an executive, a Trojan warrior with coffee, and a sleeping intern.

Studio executives are reportedly thrilled with the rapper's unmistakable 21st-century aura, arguing that a historically accurate Ancient Greek god would never open a movie in China.

Brushing off intense critical debate following last week’s blockbuster release, Warner Bros. executives confirmed Tuesday that Travis Scott’s thoroughly modern, screen-addicted facial structure is precisely what is driving the commercial success of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

Despite purist complaints that the multi-platinum artist looks like he has a crypto wallet rather than a working knowledge of the Aegean Sea, early tracking numbers have fully vindicated the studio's mandate. Industry insiders noted that while Nolan strictly enforced a period-accurate set—famously banning cast members from wearing Ugg slippers between setups to maintain the illusion of antiquity—the studio explicitly demanded a lead actor who radiated the undeniable energy of a man who has seen a TikTok.

“

We needed a bankable draw, and you simply cannot open a $200 million historical epic if your Ancient Greek deity doesn't look like he occasionally checks his mentions.

—Bryce Geller, EVP of Demographic Synergies at Warner Bros. Discovery

A source close to the production claimed Nolan initially attempted to mask Scott’s aggressive 21st-century aura by shooting him exclusively in 70mm IMAX shadow, utilizing only practical firelight to obscure the fact that the actor clearly knows what Wi-Fi is. However, test screenings revealed that audiences in the crucial 18-to-34 demographic felt alienated by characters with pre-industrial gazes, prompting the studio to order $15 million in reshoots to light Scott's face like an iPad Pro.

At press time, agents at CAA were reportedly leveraging the film's $85 million opening weekend to secure Scott a highly lucrative deal to play Abraham Lincoln, citing his unparalleled ability to look like he just ordered Postmates.

Hollywood’s Favorite Ugg Slippers (To Never Wear on a Christopher Nolan Set)

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” has spawned countless debates since its blockbuster release — over representation and historical accuracy and, at least in my friend group, whether Travis Scott has iPhone face. But another, albeit much more benign, question has emerged during the press cycle this week: can an actor convincingly play an Ancient Greek god […]

The news, approximately.
