A new paper is advising individuals who experience severe facial flushing and nausea after a single sip of beer to wait for a larger, double-blind trial before making any rash decisions to stop drinking.
The phenomenon, clinically tied to an ALDH2 enzyme deficiency and colloquially known as "Asian glow," has been widely documented, but experts caution that the existing literature relies heavily on patients subjectively observing their own faces turning bright magenta. While early data indicates an association between the missing enzyme and a severe toxic reaction, lead authors of the study warned against prematurely concluding that the immediate, painful rejection of a substance means the substance should be avoided entirely.
While the rapid accumulation of carcinogenic acetaldehyde in the bloodstream is a known risk factor, we do not currently have the 40-year longitudinal data to definitively prove that drinking poison when your body explicitly lacks the enzyme to process poison is a bad idea.
Following the study’s publication, the FDA issued a preliminary statement reminding consumers that ceasing alcohol consumption based on a violently adverse physical reaction could introduce unverified confounding variables into a patient's weekend. The agency stressed that until a peer-reviewed consensus is reached, individuals experiencing rapid heart rate and extreme dizziness at happy hour should maintain their current drinking protocol to preserve the integrity of the sample size.
The authors noted in an appendix that if a patient's airway begins to restrict entirely after a half-glass of Pinot Noir, more research is needed to rule out the possibility that the wine was simply improperly aerated.
