A retrospective review published Thursday in JAMA Ophthalmology examined survey-based ocular exposure among a cohort of 142 Johnson & Johnson product formulation technicians. The data revealed a statistically significant link between Friday afternoon lab shifts and researchers intentionally lathering the proprietary golden liquid directly onto their own scleras while standing over the breakroom sink. However, the study’s authors noted that because the behavioral tracking relied entirely on unmonitored questionnaires, the precise volume of soap utilized—as well as the exact pitch of the resulting giggling—could not be independently verified.
Given that the subjects are actively employed by the manufacturer, independent peer reviewers warned that the findings may be subject to severe selection bias and inherent conflict-of-interest complications. The paper's authors ultimately disclosed that they could not definitively rule out the possibility that the scientists were simply daring one another to see who could refrain from blinking the longest under the tap.
While preliminary observations indicate the technicians are having a profoundly good time, we must remember that a localized breakroom phenomenon does not automatically translate to broader workplace amusement.
Though the "No More Tears" formula was clinically validated for infant tolerability decades ago, the physiological mechanisms driving adults with advanced biochemistry degrees to repeatedly cover their faces in suds remain poorly understood. Analysts emphasize that confounding variables—such as chronic lab fatigue, proximity to the emergency eyewash station, or a lack of managerial supervision—make it difficult to isolate the exact biological triggers for the activity. Furthermore, without a control group utilizing standard, heavily stinging adult shampoos, it is impossible to determine whether the absence of pain is the primary driver of the enjoyment or merely a secondary benefit.
At present, recommendations from regulatory bodies remain highly conservative. The FDA continues to advise that until randomized, double-blind clinical trials can definitively prove that rubbing pediatric bath products into one's own eyes is the most entertaining way to pass a Tuesday, the general public should refrain from replicating the technicians' methodology.
