GILBERT, Ariz. — Acting on an anonymous tip regarding unregulated verticality, Whispering Pines Homeowners Association President Gary Vance has reportedly launched a formal tape-measure investigation into a suspiciously tall patch of sunflowers on a local cul-de-sac.
Vance, 62, was observed early Tuesday morning extending a Stanley FatMax 25-foot tape measure alongside the stalks, carefully documenting their height on a clipboard. According to neighbors, the HOA president spent nearly forty minutes photographing the plants from multiple angles, testing soil density, and comparing the garden's dimensions against a laminated, color-coded copy of the community’s landscaping bylaws.
These organisms are operating well outside the authorized 36-inch maximum for decorative flora, effectively making them unpermitted load-bearing structures.
The homeowner, 34-year-old Sarah Jenkins, reportedly planted the Helianthus annuus seeds in April as a weekend gardening project with her toddler. Vance has since issued a 14-page cease-and-desist letter to the Jenkins residence, demanding the sunflowers immediately halt all photosynthetic activity until an architectural variance can be reviewed at the next bi-weekly board meeting.
At press time, Vance was seen using a laser level to determine if a nearby birdbath was violating municipal setback requirements.
