With ambient temperatures plunging below freezing earlier this week, a locally owned garden gnome has officially entered its third consecutive winter lying motionless face down in a bed of hardened cedar mulch. The hollow ceramic figure, originally knocked over by a stray garden hose in May 2022, remains wedged beneath the decaying root system of a dormant hosta plant while residents of the home continue to step around it.
Despite being located less than three feet from the front walkway, the eight-inch ornamental figure has seen no relief efforts from property owner David Kessler. Kessler reportedly glanced directly at the inverted gnome while retrieving a cardboard package on Tuesday afternoon, pausing for a fraction of a second before proceeding inside without rendering aid. Household records indicate Kessler has mowed the adjacent lawn over 60 times since the initial displacement, on each occasion carefully maneuvering his Honda push mower around the sprawling ceramic legs rather than bending at the waist to right the statue.
Prolonged exposure to the elements has taken a severe toll on the artifact. The figure’s painted red hat has faded to a chipped pink, while its exposed ceramic underside has begun to gather a dense layer of gray winter frost.
At this point, the statue has become a load-bearing structural element of the mulch bed, and removing it would likely disrupt an entire subterranean ecosystem.
The situation briefly appeared to be nearing a resolution last April when Kessler’s wife, Sarah, nudged the gnome with the toe of her sneaker to assess the damage. However, upon discovering the figure's bearded face was heavily caked in wet soil and acting as a ceiling for a thriving colony of pillbugs, she reportedly grimaced, withdrew her foot, and returned to her vehicle. Since that aborted intervention, the family has allowed a thick layer of autumn oak leaves to form a natural burial shroud over the ceramic torso, obscuring everything except a single white porcelain boot.
At press time, Kessler had just purchased a set of heavy illuminated plastic reindeer for the front lawn, instructing his teenage son to unpack the boxes and set up the display directly on top of the hosta bed.
