Lone nylon spatula successfully barricades kitchen drawer from inside

└─ FIG. 01 In an Oak Park kitchen, Brian Hennessey yanks a drawer open three-eighths of an inch against a wedged OXO Good Grips spatula as a plumber and neighbor watch bemusedly.

Executing a flawless vertical-wedge maneuver, a standard OXO Good Grips slotted spatula completely locked down a cabinet Tuesday evening, cutting off a local resident’s access to his culinary tools.

OAK PARK, Ill. — Brian Hennessey, 34, first encountered the structural anomaly while attempting to retrieve a pair of metal tongs to manipulate a pan of browning chicken thighs. Hennessey pulled the brass handle and found the drawer opened exactly three-eighths of an inch before striking an impenetrable, load-bearing barrier.

After several minutes of applying rapid, escalating force to the drawer tracks, Hennessey reportedly retrieved his smartphone, activated the flashlight, and peered through the narrow gap. Visual confirmation revealed the black nylon utensil had somehow rotated 90 degrees since its last deployment, planting its broad head against the drawer’s back wall while wedging its handle precisely beneath the lip of the quartz countertop.

The implement adopted a rigid defensive posture shortly after 6:00 p.m.

By catching the interior cabinet frame at a 45-degree angle, the spatula has effectively converted a slight upward pull into thousands of pounds of sheer mechanical resistance.

Further attempts to dislodge the defender by blindly sliding a butter knife through the opening only succeeded in knocking a loose wire whisk into a secondary blocking position, further reinforcing the blockade.

Recognizing the tactical superiority of the fortified drawer, Hennessey ceased all breaching efforts. He was last seen attempting to flip the sputtering chicken breasts using a silicone basting brush and a plastic measuring cup.
