A beloved church leader remembered for his distressed V-neck tees and acoustic guitar solos died Thursday during a high-risk youth group maneuver.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Kevin Hicks, 28, a youth pastor who once convinced a Wednesday night study group that the Apostle Paul was "basically an Avenger," died Thursday after attempting to sit backwards on a metal folding chair. Colleagues confirmed Hicks was midway through pivoting his legs over the seat to show a group of eighth-graders he was "just one of the guys" when his center of gravity catastrophically shifted.
Hicks was a towering figure in the regional basement-ministry scene. Over a six-year career, he survived eight consecutive overnight lock-ins and held the parish record for the longest acoustic guitar intro ever played at a pizza social.
He died exactly how he lived, risking it all to casually rest his chin on a backrest while explaining the dangers of secular hip-hop.
He is survived by his wife, Megan; his favorite capo; and an unfinished sermon comparing the Holy Spirit to a strong Wi-Fi signal. Services will be held Tuesday in the fellowship hall, where attendees are firmly requested to remain facing forward.
