MLB voids prospect's $2.8M contract after staged grave fails the eye test

└─ FIG. 01 MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred gestures sternly at a crumpled fake tombstone with pinned death certificate during a makeshift press conference at a Cleveland cemetery, as a Guardians scout pokes at plastic grass nearby.

Major League Baseball has voided a $2.8 million agreement with the Cleveland Guardians after an investigation concluded the player’s handler lacked the veteran savvy required to successfully falsify a death certificate.

The league office announced the suspension Friday, citing the prospect's failure to demonstrate the necessary intangibles to pull off a multi-million-dollar identity-laundering scheme. The plot, aimed at shaving two years off the player’s age, included forged medical records, altered school transcripts, and a staged gravesite that scouts noted completely fell apart under the eye test.

“

You can’t just throw some loose dirt over a plywood cross and expect to clear a $2.8 million payday. That kind of undisciplined, low-effort fraud might play in the independent leagues, but at this level, we need to see elite attention to detail when subverting international labor law.

—Greg Halstead, MLB Director of International Labor Acquisitions

The Cleveland Guardians, who had eagerly anticipated exploiting the prospect’s purported youth for six years of league-minimum club control, expressed profound disappointment in the handler's execution. Front office analysts noted that while the prospect’s bat speed showed promise, his representation's inability to properly bribe a municipal coroner raised serious red flags about his system fit.

The suspension comes amid a broader league mandate to crack down on unforced errors in the Dominican Republic. Following a brief owners' meeting, Commissioner Rob Manfred issued a memo reminding all 30 clubs that moving forward, any falsified death certificates submitted to the league office must be properly laminated and cross-referenced with the league's official sportsbook partner.
