As a massive tranche of equities approaches its lockup expiry next month, exchange officials are gently reminding shareholders that they don't actually have to click 'Sell'.

HONG KONG—Facing a looming liquidity event that threatens an already underperforming market, the Hong Kong stock exchange issued a formal plea on Thursday, begging shareholders to simply leave their $33 billion in newly unfrozen equity alone.

The massive tranche of shares, tied to a wave of recent equities offerings, will officially pass its lockup expiry next month. While the expiration legally permits early investors and insiders to finally trade their holdings, market regulators are urging participants to consider the undeniable benefits of just pretending the shares are still locked.

“

We understand that legally, these shares are now yours to trade, but we would consider it a tremendous personal favor if you simply logged out of your brokerage accounts and went for a nice walk.

—Arthur Leung, Director of Trying To Keep The Line From Going Down at HKEX

Market analysts warn that the $33 billion lockup expiry comes at a uniquely vulnerable time for Hong Kong equities. In preparation for the release, institutional investors have reportedly spent the past three weeks conducting high-frequency index-finger stretching routines to ensure they can successfully dump their entire portfolios within the first four milliseconds of the opening bell.

To mitigate the anticipated damage, the exchange has quietly begun implementing a series of structural deterrents. Trading platforms across the territory will soon feature a mandatory 45-minute unskippable video about the virtues of patience before allowing access to a "Sell" button, which developers have already redesigned to perfectly match the background color of the terminal.
