The video platform is expanding its likeness detection program to all adult users, allowing everyday citizens to submit detailed facial scans to ensure their image isn't being illicitly synthesized.

YouTube announced Thursday it is expanding its AI deepfake detection tool to all users over the age of 18, offering millions of everyday citizens the opportunity to upload their facial biometrics and confirm that absolutely no one is generating synthetic media of them. The likeness detection feature, which requires a comprehensive selfie-style scan, will continuously monitor billions of hours of content to reassure regional sales managers, dental hygienists, and local zoning board members that they remain entirely irrelevant to the global deepfake economy.

Following a successful pilot program that protected high-profile politicians, celebrities, and journalists from illicit impersonation, YouTube executives noted that regular, non-famous adults were increasingly eager to hand over their biometric data to combat a completely nonexistent threat to their personal brand.

“

We quickly realized that everyday Americans also want the peace of mind that comes from handing over a high-resolution map of their face to a multinational advertising conglomerate.

—Kevin Albright, Global Head of Vanity Analytics at YouTube

Albright noted that any adult can now utilize the platform's state-of-the-art neural networks to verify that zero out of 114 million active creator channels have ever considered synthesizing the likeness of a mid-level logistics coordinator from Peoria.

The company confirmed that while the feature is highly accurate, historical data shows the number of removal requests from everyday users is expected to remain "very small," hovering around precisely zero. At press time, millions of users had reportedly completed their facial scans and were eagerly waiting for YouTube to alert them that a foreign bot farm had finally deemed them important enough to impersonate.

The likeness detection feature uses a selfie-style scan of a person's face to monitor YouTube for lookalikes. If there is a match, YouTube alerts the user; the person then has the option to request that YouTube remove the content. YouTube has said in the past that it has found the number of removal requests to be "very small." YouTube began testing the feature with content creators, and then expanded it to government officials, politicians, journalists, and fina … Read the full story at The Verge.
